Question: Mathematical Literacy/TEST 2 Grade 11
3 TERM 3
FSDoE/September 2025
QUESTION 1
1.1 In TABLE 1 below is a list of explanations and definitions of concepts used in Mathematical Literacy.
TABLE 1: EXPLANATIONS AND DEFINITIONS OF CONCEPTS
A A record of information about remuneration.
B When the income is bigger than the expenses.
C The percentage change in the cost of goods from one year to another.
D A plan that shows the layout of a building as seen from above.
E When the expenses are bigger than the income.
F A plan that shows how items are arranged in a certain space.
G The method whereby interest is calculated on the principal amount of money that was invested/borrowed plus on any interest accrued.
H A measure of change in the purchasing power of money over time.
Use the information above to write down the letter of the explanation or definition (A to H) of each of the following concepts:
1.1.1 Inflation (2)
1.1.2 Floor plan (2)
1.1.3 Compound Interest (2)
1.1.4 Profit (2)
1.2 Mr Naidoo works at the Department of Water and Sanitation in Bloemfontein, as a general worker. Below is the list of his income and expenses for the month of September:
TABLE 2: INCOME AND EXPENDITURE STATEMENT
INCOME Amount (Rands)
Salary R7000
Overtime R1500
Total Income R8500
EXPENSES
Rent R750
Groceries R1200
Water and Electricity A
Petrol R1250
loan repayment R890
Entertainment R500
Total Expenses R5500
Surplus/Deficit B
Use information and TABLE 2 above to answer the questions that follow.
1.2.1 Identify the low priority expense. (2)
1.2.2 Determine the value of A, amount spent on water and electricity. (3)
1.2.3 Calculate the value of B and state whether it is a surplus or deficit. (3)
1. **Problem Statement:**
Identify the correct letters for the given concepts from TABLE 1 and solve income and expenses problems for Mr Naidoo.
2. **Step 1: Match concepts with definitions**
- Inflation: It is the percentage change in the cost of goods from one year to another, so the letter is $C$.
- Floor plan: A plan that shows the layout of a building as seen from above, so the letter is $D$.
- Compound Interest: The method whereby interest is calculated on the principal amount plus any interest accrued, so the letter is $G$.
- Profit: When the income is bigger than the expenses, so the letter is $B$.
3. **Step 2: Identify low priority expense**
From the expenses listed, entertainment is usually considered a low priority expense. So the answer is Entertainment.
4. **Step 3: Calculate amount spent on water and electricity (A)**
Given:
Total Expenses = R5500
Sum of known expenses = Rent + Groceries + Petrol + Loan repayment + Entertainment
= 750 + 1200 + 1250 + 890 + 500 = R4590
Calculate $A$:
$$A = 5500 - 4590 = 910$$
5. **Step 4: Calculate surplus/deficit (B)**
Total Income = R8500
Total Expenses = R5500
Calculate $B$:
$$B = 8500 - 5500 = 3000$$
Since income is greater than expenses, it is a surplus.
**Final answers:**
1.1.1 Inflation: $C$
1.1.2 Floor plan: $D$
1.1.3 Compound Interest: $G$
1.1.4 Profit: $B$
1.2.1 Low priority expense: Entertainment
1.2.2 Amount spent on water and electricity $A = 910$
1.2.3 Surplus $B = 3000$ (Surplus)
